Dylan: I don't want to.
Me: He didn't even want to do them with Miss Sonya.
Kate: Why? That doesn't make any sense. I want to play every sport I can.

Disney 2012 - Magic Kingdom part 3
And, the great departure from the parks begins.
AM, finished loading and then off for a 7 AM birthday breakfast for Ben at Chef Mickey's where Pluto, Minnie, Donald, Goofy, and Mickey all came by. A short walk to the Magic Kingdom and we were off to the races one last day. Hit all the high points and favorites including Splash Mtn and Big Thunder Mtn (3 rides for the big kids, Drew to the point he kept his hands up the whole time), Peter Pan, Pooh, Goofy's Barnstormer, Buzz Lightyear (Sherri was the best shooter here), and the TTA ride.
Smoothies and the biggest ice cream cookie sandwich ever were the snacks of the day. Pretty hot and definitely the biggest crowd, but our plan was to head out around two anyway so that was a minor inconvenience.
Amazingly we ran into some Mount Zion people as we headed out of the park one last time.
Headed to Downtown Disney to use up the remaining snack credits we had including cupcakes for Ben's birthday and build your own rice krispie Mickey heads. Our overall departure was delayed a good hour by a huge downpour that kept us in stores rather then walking to grab lunch. Finally picked up our food at a good Irish deli place then we were on our way.
Landed in St. Augustine a couple hours later, played in the sand and Atlantic for about 20 minutes, then hotel and bed time.
Tomorrow, frolic on the beach for a bit more in the AM then the scenic route through south GA and home.

Disney 2012 - Epcot Day the 2nd
So Friday was a repeat trip back to Epcot, mainly because the parents like it and we had a bit more exploring to do there than elsewhere. All in all, a pretty quiet day by Disney standards. No mega free random things, etc. Since I am writing this a day late, I may miss some highlights. To the point of the trip where the days blend a bit.
There at the crack of opening where we immediately began hitting the family favorite Soarin'. By the end of the day, I think we rode it 12 or more times in total. Ben got quite comfortable with it, even willing to go with eyes open for the fighter jet scene.
The crowds picked up a bit also which we expected with a weekend coming but still nothing that slowed us down a bit. The overall themes for the week included awesome weather and minimal crowds.
Hit a smorgasbord of snacks at France including a napolean, eclair, and apple turnover. Drew and Chris liked the napolean, girls went for the turnover. Ben couldn't commit. Awesomely, Ben's continued fascination with trash cans continued which was ever so delightful for the rest of us. Ate lunch in Japan, awesome again especially the green tea ice cream.
Also had a chocolate chip cookie dough ice cream sundae in the morning. Good eating habits go out the window a bit when we have to fuel 4 pairs of legs for miles of daily walking.
Kate, Drew, and Sherri spent most of the afternoon doing the Agent Perry spy search throughout the world showcase. Quite awesome. They explored most of the countries while making various things happen like Perry rapelling in France, rocks lighting up in China, and cuckoo clocks tolling in Germany.
Chris and Ben hit the countries to get stamps and signatures from each place including "Happy Birthday" and Ben written in some of the odder languages like Moroccan and Chinese. They may have written "Hamster Monkey" for all we know, but that's fine.
Dinner at O'hana. Awesome food, way slow service. That place was operating on Hawaii time which is never a favorite speed in our house. Back to the hotel and did most of our packing and loading.

Disney 2012 - Animal Kingdom day
Well, today's random freebie started off right away. On our way in the park, Sherri and the kids were stopped by a worker asking if we wanted to be the family of the day in the park. Duh. It was either the three cute kids or the 3 matching Animal shirts they were wearing. Anyway, we got to head back to Camp MinnieMickey well before anyone else came in, hang out with Chip and Dale for a while, and help them raise the Animal Kingdom flag. Then, we were first in line to hang out with Mickey and Minnie for pictures. Fun, right?
Not done yet. Then, we got front row seats at the Lion King show. Kate, Drew, and Ben then got to show the entire crowd how to do the Hakuna Matata dance. This was doubly big for Drew as he doesn't like to volunteer for anything or be the center of attention.
Then, Ben got a special birthday thank you card.
Then, they got to get out and dance around with the people in the show. Yowza, what a start to the day. All of this took such a long time that we have decided to hit Animal Kingdom a second time on Saturday to catch the stuff we didn't get to today. Very fun, the kids had a blast doing all of that stuff.
So, what next? Rode the Safari ride a total of three times. Had to stop due to giraffes in the road. Saw every animal multiple times, many up close. Kate and Ben called it their favorite ride.
We hit the Bug's Life show, not a big hit in our family. Explored the trails. Kate did Everest 3 times liking it more and more each time. Spent time in DinoLand, especially in the playground and digging areas which was Drew's fave. He got to learn a lot about mammoths. Kali River Rapids resulted in Kate and Drew getting happily drenched.
Snacks were Mickey ice cream bars. Ben was quite the sight to behold. Lunch was at the Flame Tree. Eating outside, there were a lot of ducks, ibis, and storks around waiting to pounce on dropped foods which made Drew a bit nervous. As he calmed down and got comfortable with them, he even blurted out "Hey, look at the dorks!" in a bit of a spoonerism of ducks and storks. That left everyone laughing for a while.
Quick jaunt to the hotel then we hit Downtown Disney for about an hour. Kids spent the remainder of the money on a Kermit (Kate), Fozzie (Drew), and Animal (Ben). 2 of the 3 are currently being clutched during sleep.
Dinner at Boma, which was really good with really odd choices. The main fave was fufu (some sort of sweet potato dish. The boys were acting like they hadn't been in a restaurant before which resulted in some outside talks, but it was mostly fine. Explored at night and saw some giraffes hanging out.
Off to bed and back to Epcot tomorrow which is the one park that hasn't resulted in some ridiculous freebie or day changing surprise at this point. The pressure is on Epcot, let's see what you deliver.

Good morning
Guess which family got picked to open the park by raising the flag with Chip and Dale? We also got to meet characters first.

Disneyworld 2012 - Day 4
Also known as day 2 of Magic Kingdom, the day in which we managed to hit all missed points from the previous day and blast through repeats of all the faves.
Favorite ride of the day? Jungle Cruise for Kate and Ben, Big Thunder Mountain for Drew.
We hit the start of the day early as normal, getting to the park right at the opening bell. Things started off with K, D, and C riding Big Thunder Mountain three times in a row without even having to get off the train. S and B rode it twice before he decided it was enough. This was a good sign of crowd levels for the entire day.
It then became a mad rush through the day back and forth across the park to take advantage of Fast Pass timing and hitting the rides (Jungle Cruise, PhilHarMagic, Wedway People Mover, etc) that we hadn't hit the day before. Popular repeats were Space Mountain for Drew, Buzz Lightyear 6 times for everybody, the Swiss Family Treehouse, and Pooh repeatedly. Pooh and Peter Pan are probably Ben's actual favorites.
Cool random freebie of the day (we seem to get one every day) - As we were walking up to the Jungle Cruise to wait in line, one of the drivers approached us and asked if we would like a private boat with one other family. So, we rode in a boat built for 25 with only 6 other people (Jayhawkers) and even got the driver to sing Happy Birthday to Ben.
We also re-did Cosmic Ray's for lunch, due to volume of food for 5 Phelan's. Snacks of the day were smoothies and the ice cream cookie sandwich which was more than enough for three hungry kids. Some mid-day child grumbling was mostly worked through by all parties.
Drew and Kate continued fantastic work earning their Phelan legs. Pretty sure we would have pounded most of their friends into submission by this point.
Dinner was at Cape May at the Beach Club, heavy seafood theming on that one. Everybody liked it. Ben really liked it, mainly because it had paper tablecloths you could draw on. He basically covered the whole thing.
A late jaunt around the Boardwalk area basically ended the night. B and D really liked the ESPN bathrooms thanks to the TVs in them. Home and bed by 9:30. Animal Kingdom tomorrow.

Disneyworld 2012 - Day 3
Magic Kingdom day. Nice early start as always. We headed to the Magic Kingdom for a day of fun and frolic. This park is the furthest off so we headed out at 8:15 and made it there in good time of the 9 AM open. Immediate jaunt to Frontier Land for Big Thunder and Splash Mountains. Kate loved both, Drew like Splash more than Big Thunder (we'll come back to that), and Ben did really well for his first big kid coaster action. He basically screamed the whole time since he thought that was a necessary thing to do.
Side note: Kids, as you read this blog in 10 years or more, you need to realize that mom and dad pretty much dominate Disneyworld with awesome timing, Fast Pass usage, and maneuvering through crowds. There can't be many families that hit everything as quickly and easily as we do. Just remember that.
Highlights of the day? Kate did not like driving her own car at the Grand Prix Raceway. Drew momentarily lost his Cubs hat, but Chris tracked it down while the rest of the family went on It's A Small World. That's pretty much a win win for all parties. We were randomly given the world's largest ice cream sundae (basically the size of Kate's head with a cookie, brownie, sponge cake, who knows how many scoops, chocolate/strawberry/caramel/pineapple sauces, and 4 inches of whipped topping by a Disney worker. It took us 8 minutes to eat it as a family. In your face American propensity for overindulgence.
Today was a day that surprised the parents a bit as we had to encounter some big changes from previous trips that caused us to learn some new things about park layouts and inner workings. Change bad.
We rode the monorail in, the steamboat out. Saw the parade. Hit about half the rides in the park. We will definitely his this park again. Ben managed a good nap fairly late in the day. Ate at Crystal Palace with Tigger and the gang. Yummy. The kids all hit various levels of slap happiness by the end of the day, mainly Ben with his random singing in the car on the way back to the hotel.
Kate got to go up and take the pirate pledge at Pirates of the Caribbean. Drew got to fistbump with multiple characters. Ben has managed to hug just about everyone. No character fears for anyone. Did the park stroller free for the first time today. Liberating in terms of mobility and whininess about who got to ride in it.
Major kudos to Kate and Drew who really earned their Phelan legs today.
Fave rides? Kate said Big Thunder as did Ben though his might have been the monorail. Drew loved Goofy's Barnstormer though he did end up really enjoying the mountain coasters and even rode with his hand's up for most of it.

Disney 2012 - Day 2 - Epcot
Welcome back you lucky survivors. You have to say it with a Norwegian accent to get the full impact. Between that and Sam Eagle's "A salute to all nations, but mostly America" line, those may be the favored two quotes from Disneyword.
Epcot day
Started off a bit later, just had to be at the park by 9 which was nice. So, breakfast was some bars in the car and then off to the races. Autographs from the big 6 characters and then the first of 5 Soarin' rides throughout the day. Once again, the crowds were quite good and today the weather held off all day long.
We hit the big rides, saw manatees and sharks, and had a blast. Drew continually wanted to sit with Dad, Ben with Mom, and Kate bounced back and forth. We spent the first couple of hours on the side with the rides prior to heading to the world showcase to see countries and characters. Came across Mary Poppins, Alice in Wonderland, Belle, Beast, and Snow White among others. Ate lunch in Japan at their quick service place. Note to self, eat there every time. Good food and sort of a hidden nook. Snack time in Norway....yum. Mousse and creme puffs.
Spent the evening bouncing between the two sides for more Soarin', Mission to Space, and back to Mexico. Ended the night in Norway for dinner which everyone really enjoyed. Salmon for most which I think Sherri and Kate really dug on. Drew loved the asparagus, probably equally for how it tasted and for learning what it does to you when you go to the bathroom. Lots of princesses for pictures. Kate is rapidly gaining on all of them size wise.
Fireworks to end the night then a walk to the car, two sleeping boys, and gearing up for Magic Kingdom tomorrow.
Favorite rides? Kate was Mission Space, Drew was Soarin', Ben was probably the Living Seas.

Disney 2012 - Day 1
Or day 2, depending on how you count it. Really, day 1 in the parks so we will go with that. Hollywood Studios today with a super early 8 AM start due to breakfast t the Hollywood and Vine in the park prior to it opening. We ate with Oso, Handy Manny, June, and Jake. Gloriously, it appears all kids are A-OK with all the characters. Ben spent copious amounts of time trying to tickle Oso. We ate and were merry. We treated today as Drew's birthday so he wore his birthday pin and heard Happy Birthday dozens of times. This also resulted in a free birthday breakfast cupcake for Drew
Headed to the rides since the park was just opening up and had our first of 6 rides on Toy Story Mania. This was easily Drew's favorite ride. Every trip was Drew and Chris, Ben and Sherri, and Kate in her own car. Lots of high scores and fun times.
We hit every ride and event in the park we wanted, some with multiple trips. Low crowds (yay for homeschooling) due to school timing and lots of rain through about 2 PM but we soldiered through it all because Phelans don't stop for that kind of thing. We all did Tower of Terror. Ben and Drew were not huge fans.
Kate's favorite ride was Rock N Roller Coaster which she did with Sherri 3 times. We got to see Chris get picked as a volunteer at Indiana Jones where his big tryout was with an evil laugh. He then got to do a bonus death scene after getting "shot" during a "knife attack". The kids very much liked that.
Headed to Pepper Market for late lunch. This resulted in Ben's favorite ride of the day........the bus. Awesome food and a very awesome server that not only brought Drew a birthday brownie, but ice creams for Kate and Drew just because. Ben had managed about a 20 minute nap at that point.
Headed back to the park for more rides. Stayed late and watched Fantasmic which the kids all liked, though Ben did nod off again. Back to the hotel after 9, Drew had zonked out. Ben got a momentary 4th wind. Kate is just now falling asleep.
Epcot tomorrow.

Disney 2012 - Night One
Pop Century, room 6415
All kids are now winding their way to sleepytown. Drew and Ben sharing a bed, Kate in a sleeping bag on the floor. We had a pretty easy drive here timewise, just a hair under 8 hours. We had tons of rain, mainly south Georgia and North Florida, at times too heavy to really see. So, that was a blast.
Ben slept a little on the way but they were all basically wide awake the whole time, even after three monster soccer games to start the day.
Party time tomorrow at Hollywood Studios.

That was a total of 7 big pieces of watermelon that he ate in addition
to his sandwich roll-ups, carrots, and giant Subway cookie.
